N. Pappas: Thessaloniki deserves a public exhibition that will highlight the city as a center on the international stage – 2024-09-15 07:04:39

The special importance of the International Exhibition for the city of Thessaloniki, with its public character, extroversion and highlighting of the natural environment and culture, was pointed out by the President of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA – PS, Nikos Pappasduring the meeting he held with representatives of the Administration of the International Exhibition of Thessaloniki and the Workers’ Union.

The Management was represented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of TEF HELEXPO, Anastasios Tzikas, the Managing Director, Kyriakos Pozrikidis and the General Manager, Alexis Tsaxirlis. While Mr. Pappa was accompanied by the Secretary of SYRIZA – PS, Rania Svigou, the Secretary of K.O., Th. Tzakri, the MPs of Thessaloniki, Chr. Giannoulis, R. Thraskia, K. Notopoulou, S. Famellos. The meeting was also attended by the MPs and Heads of Departments, K. Vetta, G. Gavrilos, G. Karameros, K. Malama, Al. Meikopoulos, Th. Xanthopoulos, An. Panagiotopoulos, P. Polakis, G. Sarakiotis, the Director of K.O, Th. Moraitis and the press representative of SYRIZA – PS, P. Papageorgiou.

The Administration of TIF HELEXPO informed the representatives of the official opposition party about the organization of the operation of TIF, the course of the reconstruction of the countries of the Exhibition, the international contacts and the continuation of the activity in the administration of TIF Hellexpo SA.

Mr. Nikos Pappas emphasized the continuous and active interest of SYRIZA-PS in the operation of the exhibition, already during the period of the government of SYRIZA-PS, while he recalled the need to raise funds from European resources and financial development tools, in order to ensure the public nature of the Exhibition. At the same time, he connected the course of the TIF with the completion of critical infrastructure in Thessaloniki, which has been significantly delayed in recent years.

For their part, the MPs of SYRIZA PS spoke about the delays found in the reconstruction of the TIF, expressed their comments on the proposed plan and the exclusion of areas, such as Agia Fotini, while they also expressed their concern regarding the transfer of departments of ownership to individuals, but also the management of the financing of the Public Investment Program for the benefit of the individual.

The members of the Workers’ Union expressed their strong concern about the future of their contracts and the course of their working relationship, in the context of the new TIF reconstruction plan, in the meeting that followed with the representatives of SYRIZA – PS, with Mr. Pappas to emphasize that the voice of the workers meets the voice of the opposition, which is on their side and on a common front to defend and safeguard their labor rights.

“You know that our own government made very important efforts to highlight the institution, to bring it back to the international status that befits the organization itself, but also the city”, said in his statements, upon the conclusion of the meetings, the President of the SYRIZA – PS Committee, Nikos Pappas.

At the same time, he referred to the presentation of the plan for the reconstruction of the TIF, expressing skepticism about the project’s implementation model, and whether and to what extent the choice of the public-private sector partnership method will come at the expense of public interests or not. “We believe that the 5-year delay is not accidental and that no available European resources were used to implement the project exclusively as a public one. It is clear that we will wait for the details of the plan to make a decision as a whole. And about whether the interests of the public, but also of the city, are being compromised, which is entitled to have its own report, a report that prioritizes its own needs, but also of course the needs of the employees, with whom we will be in constant contact contact to make sure that their working conditions and contracts will not be infected by a contracting virus,” noted Mr. Pappas.

Concluding, he argued that “the city is entitled to its own public exhibition with the protection and promotion of the natural environment. An exhibition that will highlight the city as a center on the international stage. We have many coincidences in what should be done with the management, and of course we will be on the side of the workers”.

The full statement:

“We had a meeting with the administration of TIF and the Workers’ Union. You also know, most of you who work in Thessaloniki, that our own government made very important efforts to highlight the institution, to bring it back to the international status that befits the organization itself, but also the city. We had the presentation of the regeneration plan and we also expressed our skepticism about the project implementation model, and whether and to what extent the choice of the public-private sector partnership method will come at the expense of public interests or not. We believe that it is no coincidence that there was a 5-year delay and that no available European resources were used to implement the project exclusively as a public one. It is clear that we will wait for the details of the plan to make a decision as a whole. And about whether the interests of the public, but also of the city, are being compromised, which is entitled to have its own report, a report that prioritizes its own needs, but also of course the needs of the workers, with whom we will be in constant contact contact to make sure that their working conditions and contracts will not be infected by a contracting virus. The city is entitled to its own public exhibition with the protection and promotion of the natural environment. An exhibition that will highlight the city as a center on the international stage. We have a lot of agreement on what should be done with management, and of course, as I said before, we will be on the side of the workers”.
