Scientists discover mysterious radio signal from outer space with a pattern similar to that of a heartbeat. Did that signal come from alien?
The mysterious signal, called a fast radio burst (FRB), was detected using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope in December 2019 from a source billions of light years away. By scientists, the signal was named FRV 20191221A.
FRBs are intense bursts of radio waves with a duration of only a few milliseconds and originating from an unknown source. Scientists first discovered FRBs in 2007, and since then hundreds of such signals have come from all over space.

Unlike FRB usually only a few milliseconds in duration, this time the signal was much longer, up to three seconds. The scientists also detected radio waves at 0.2 second intervals with a pattern similar to that of a heartbeat.
“Not only is it very long, lasting about three seconds, but there are periodic peaks that are very precise, emitting every fraction of a second — boom, boom, boom — like a heartbeat,” said researcher Daniele Michilli from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mashable, Monday (18/7/2022).
But for those who wonder if this signal comes from life alien, the answer is no. Scientists think this signal may come from some kind of neutron star, or the remains of a dead star.
Some rotating neutron stars have very strong magnetic fields called pulsars or magnetars, depending on their intensity. Moment bintang As these spin rapidly, they give off electromagnetic radiation that reaches Earth in the form of radio waves.
“There aren’t many things in the universe that emit only periodic signals,” Michilli said.
“Examples that we know of in our own galaxy are pulsars and radio magnetars, which spin and emit light that looks like a lighthouse, and we think this new signal could be a magnetar or a pulsar on steroids,” he concluded.
