Mysterious Predator in New York Backyard Identified as Rare Lynx

A resident of Wilmington, New York contacted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) after finding the remains of a deer in his backyard.

“The incident was reported to the DEC by an eyewitness describing the event and a mysterious predator. It was a young female deer weighing 35 to 45 kilograms. “There aren’t many predators in the Adirondacks that can kill prey that size,” the DEC wrote on Facebook.

The predator had eaten the deer’s shoulder and torso, but then tried to bury its remains, leaving claw marks in the ground. The deer’s neck immediately behind the jaw was also injured. It is the place that predators usually stumble upon first.

“A DEC biologist came to the scene and set up a surveillance camera on the deer carcass, hoping to film the predator when it came back. It did come back, and we got some great video of it,” DEC officials said.

The video has gained considerable popularity in the social network “Facebook”, encouraging hundreds of users to express their guesses in the comments about what the beast seen in the video is.

“Looks like a cougar or mountain lion to me,” wrote one user.

“Looks like a lynx,” wrote another.

After some thought, the DEC announced that it was indeed a lynx. These animals are found all over North America, and New York State is no exception. True, they usually avoid areas inhabited by people.

“It’s not every day a predator kills a deer in a person’s backyard,” DEC officials said.

Lynxes are rare wild cats and are easily recognized by their short tails and tufts at the tips of their ears. The lynx in the video is unusual for its size.

“Monster lynx,” wrote one commenter.
