A mysterious signal from the Sun

Scientists have detected not one, but two mysterious heartbeat-like signals coming from the Sun. They are baffled by the unexpected discovery, but hope to eventually gain a better understanding of how the star works.

“This is an unexpected discovery,” Sijie Yu, an astronomer at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), said in a statement. “The rhythmic pattern is important for understanding how energy is released and dissipated in the solar atmosphere during these incredibly powerful explosions. However, the origin of these repeating patterns, also called quasi-periodic pulsations, has long been a mystery and a source of debate among physicists.”

The observations are from 2017, when data were collected using the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) radio telescope in California. The researchers noted patterns of flashes that repeat every ten to 20 seconds and likened them to a “heartbeat.”

There is no end to the mysteries

Although these pulses, known as quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs), are not unusual in themselves, the team discovered an unexpected secondary source at a point where opposing magnetic field lines on the Sun’s surface approach, break, and then rejoin, creating intense energy , which powers the eruption. This phenomenon is called magnetic reconnection.

“Repeating patterns are not uncommon in solar radio flares,” says astrophysicist Kou. “However, what is interesting is that there is a secondary source not far from the first site that we did not expect and that pulsates in a similar way. It’s the first time something like this has been detected,” he adds, adding that the researchers will continue to investigate “heartbeat-like pulses.”
