– According to Reuters on the 4th (local time), the Myanmar military withdraws $1 billion (approximately 1,125 billion won) deposited at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the name of the Central Bank of Myanmar immediately after seizing the government through a coup on the 1st of last month. I was going to move it.
These funds were already on the “gray list” subject to further investigation due to circumstances involving crimes such as drug trafficking and money laundering. When the Myanmar military tried to withdraw it on the 4th of last month, New York Yan officials delayed the approval of the transaction, and funds were tied up by issuing an executive order that would allow President Joe Biden to block the transaction indefinitely.
Reuters reported that “the US government imposed sanctions on Myanmar immediately after the military attempted withdrawal, and all Myanmar central bank funds currently deposited in US banks have been frozen indefinitely.”
Sanctions against companies related to the military are also continuing. On the 4th, the U.S. Department of Commerce listed four companies, including Myanmar Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, Myanmar Economic Enterprise, and Myanmar Economic Holding Company, on the list of export restrictions.. Transactions between the Myanmar military and U.S. companies were virtually banned. The Ministry of Commerce also implied additional sanctions on the day, saying, “We will continue to hold those who committed the coup to be held accountable for their actions.”
– However, the Myanmar military responded that it did not care about this.
On the 3rd, Deputy Commander of Myanmar’s military commander So Yun devalued the response of the United States and others, saying, “We are familiar with sanctions and have survived until now” in a dialogue with the United Nations envoy Christine Schraner Berginer.
The military and police have also posted a video of threatening the murder of the protesters on social media. MIDO, a digital rights organization in Myanmar, said, “In TikTok, a Chinese video-sharing app, we have found more than 800 videos of the military, threatening protesters.”
In this video, a soldier with a rifle threatened, “If you want to be a martyr, I will grant you that wish.”
