Myanmar protesters hang women’s clothes on clotheslines for protection

YANGON – Protesters on Myanmar hanging women’s clothes crossed the road as protection to slow down police and soldiers.

Because it is said that walking under a woman’s coat hanger is traditionally considered bad luck to men.

The long cloth known as the longyi was hung on a clothesline mounted high across the road. Sometimes women’s underwear is also hung on the clothesline.

“The reason why we hang longyi across the road is because we have a traditional belief that if we pass under the longyi, we might lose our luck,” said a 20-year-old protester who declined to give his name for fear of being hunted by soldiers.

“The younger generation now doesn’t believe anymore, but the soldiers still believe, and that’s their weakness. So, we might get more time to run if they come to us in case of emergency, “he explained.
