Myanmar court sentenced Su Chi to four years in prison – News

Su Chi has been sentenced to two years in prison under section 505 (B) of the Criminal Code for disseminating statements and rumors to provoke fear or anxiety in society that would lead to a disturbance of public peace. She was sentenced to another two years in prison for violating the “Natural Disasters Law”.

Former Myanmar President Vin Mining has also been sentenced to four years in prison for the same charges. A spokesman for the junta said the two convicts would not be taken to prison yet.

“From where they are now, they have to face further charges,” a junta spokesman said. The two former politicians were in the capital, Nephi, but did not provide more details.

Su Chi, 76, was detained after the army generals seized power and overthrew the civilian government on February 1.

The junta has since brought various charges against the Nobel Peace Prize winner, including her violation of the colonial law on state criticism. Su Chi has also been accused of corruption and falsifying election results.

Journalists have been denied access to special court hearings, and Su Chi’s lawyers have recently been banned from speaking to the media.

Since the military junta seized power in Myanmar in early February, more than 1,300 people have been killed and more than 10,000 activists detained by local human rights defenders in the crackdown on protests.
