My life has shrunk to the playground and hotel room! Czech star on the effects of the pandemic

Anna Krčmářová

Originally, you did not include the tournament in Beroun in the diary. Why did you decide to change your plans and appear on the Ladies European Tour for the first time since November?

I knew I wouldn’t play in Arkansas. I wanted to have two quieter weeks at home with the coach. I didn’t plan a tournament. But I’m competitive, so when the organizers called, I couldn’t sleep and said that I would participate in the tournament, even though the program is very crowded after the restart of the season. I feel tired, but I try to adjust the schedule to sleep as much as possible and regenerate well. There was enough inaction. I’m glad I can finally play. And the more, the better.

You have two US tournaments, followed by two more in Scotland. Was it a very difficult return to competition mode?

It’s very hard to play because I want to play well and I’m in good shape. I’m learning to play under pressure again after a long time. It will probably take me a few more weeks to get to the right rhythm. That’s why I actually welcomed the chance to play Tipsport Czech Ladies Open.

Are you satisfied with the results after a break of more than six months due to the coronavirus pandemic?

All courses were very demanding, the conditions were very difficult. In Toledo, Sylvania, Aberdeen and Troon, the tournaments were accompanied by strong winds and rainy weather. The most demanding are time shifts and flights. But it strengthened me. I feel stronger. And I’m grateful that the last two years have been what they were, even though I didn’t play great and didn’t shine. I am internally convinced that I am on the right path.

You will introduce yourself at the tournament in the Czech Republic after four years. What are the strongest memories of previous home appearances?

Probably for the first Albatross tournaments, where I played well and I was very successful there. At the opposite pole would be my performance at Dýšina, where we didn’t get along very well with the pitch. I hope Beroun will play with me. I’m looking forward. The playground is in beautiful condition. For me, it’s a home environment. I can speak my native language, indulge in Czech food and maybe even a small beer.

Will you reveal the ambitions with which you will enter the tournament in Beroun?

I’m trying to move forward. Every day I play the best golf I can. And that’s the plan for the coming weekend. I want to be more consistent. Learn to play under pressure. Keep the right mindset. But you don’t train it other than in tournaments.

Is it pleasant for you that after four tournaments without a spectator scenery, golf fans can go to the course in Beroun?

I’m very happy for that! Especially at the British Open it was very sad. Without spectators, tournaments are not so grandiose. Of course, one has more peace of mind and can concentrate more on the game. But spectators belong to the sport and I lacked their energy.

Klára Spilková will be the main star of the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open 2020 in Beroun.

Given the number of tournaments and flights you have attended, coronavirus testing has become a part of your life. How do you tolerate them?

So far, I have completed seven. It’s not pleasant, but I understand it’s a necessity. Because of golf, one suffers. Hopefully everything will be normal soon. A lot of measures seem strange to me. It strikes me to have a hair app in my mobile that should show if a person is healthy or not. However, after a long time, I can finally do what I enjoy. I have my life motivation back, and that is crucial.

Many athletes who were under full load were positive in the tests. Is every sampling a stressful affair?

Yes. I admit I’m confused. One can run, play tennis, golf, go swimming, and then suddenly have to quarantine for a fortnight, even though he has no symptoms. I understand why it is needed and I follow everything. However, it is psychologically demanding.

Which rules related to the coronavirus pandemic, apart from the need to be tested, limit you the most during tournaments?

There are many of them. I’ve been either on the playground or at the hotel for the past four weeks. I couldn’t go anywhere else. My life has shrunk to the playground and the hotel room. Breakfast? In the room. Dinner? In the room. In front of the hotel we used to breathe fresh air. But we were not allowed to get around him. I lack the freedom to go for an ordinary walk. Have a meal in the restaurant. And I think that is very important for a person. We spend all year in tournaments. Yes, we are accommodated in beautiful hotel complexes, where they take great care of us, but we do not live … It is possible to stay a few weeks in the given regime. But I don’t want to work like this for the rest of my life.
