This comment has come out too late, because dear Jorge Cuadrelli passed away at the end of May and I did not give him the opportunity to read these lines. With his characteristic kindness he sent me his memories last March and with great modesty asked me when I could dedicate a note to him. I told him it would be during the summer and the disease that already afflicted him took him away long before. He was a teacher of dramaturgy and a theater man very loved by his family, his friends and his students. I was fortunate to work with Jorge Cuadrelli and I know what I am talking about.

Actually, “My homeland are words” is more than just memories, because the memories of

Cuadrelli are filled with reflections, micro-essays and interior monologues on topics as diverse as exile, family, art or politics, while the author travels through various countries, languages and settings, thus turning this book into a true manifesto for life. . Jorge Cuadrelli did not want to remind us how he had lived, but to show us that he continued to live in each of those pages that still transmit his torrential energy.

In “The years of learning of Wilhelm Meister” (1795), the protagonist of Goethe’s novel has finished the studies that could allow him to make a living from commerce, but his desire to be happy leads him to enlist in a traveling theater company, where he finally find the calling of your life. “My homeland are words” could have been the young Wilhelm Meister’s book, although Jorge Cuadrelli was already a “meister”, that is, a teacher.

‘My country is the words’, Jorge Cuadrelli. Editorial Samarkanda, Seville, 2020.
