Mutation Virus Changes Benign | Jakarta Newspapers

A new coronavirus strain named D614G is said to have 10 times the infectious ability. Even though it is easily transmitted, this virus is considered to have mutated to become less deadly than before.

According to representatives from the Singapore Science, Technology and Research Agency, Sebastian Maurer-Stroh said that although D614G had been found in his country, he was of the opinion that the mutation results were not always malignant. “It could be that this mutation actually makes the virus harmless,” he was quoted as saying Aljazeera.

Paul Tambyah, Senior Consultant at the National University of Singapore and president-elect of the International Society of Infectious Diseases, said the proliferation of the D614G mutated virus in several parts of the world coincided with a decrease in the death rate. This condition is considered to prove that this virus is no longer deadly to infected people.

Tambyah said most viruses tend to become less virulent as they mutate. “Maybe it’s a good thing to have a virus that’s more contagious but less deadly,” he said.

In Tambyah’s view, the virus has an interest in infecting more people but not killing, this is because the virus itself requires a host to depend on and food and shelter.

Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Menular Diseases (NIAID) Anthony Fauci said the mutation may have increased the ability to transmit the virus, however, it could be that the virus has turned more benign.

“We have no relationship whether someone got worse with this or not. It looks like the virus is replicating better and maybe more contagious, ”Fauci said in an interview with Journal of American Medical Association.

Maurer Stroh said the D614G strain had been found in the island nation, but that it had been under quarantine to prevent large-scale spread. Such mutations are likely not enough to change the virus to make a potential vaccine less effective.

“The variants are nearly identical and don’t change the areas that our immune systems normally recognize, so there shouldn’t be a difference for vaccines being developed,” said Stroh.
