Musician Katrīna Gupalo draws attention to public mental health problems with the song “Agonija”

Singer and pianist Katrīna Gupalo has published a song about the last breath of love “Agonija” and its video. With this message, the musician in cooperation with the Crisis and Counseling Center “Skalbes” calls attention to the currently very obvious public mental health problems.

I wrote the song “Agonija” two years ago, when I was in a very depressed state for a long time. It was a time when I felt cruel and ruthless criticism on my skin, which I could not “filter out” and perceived very directly and painfully. At that time, I didn’t really see any light at the end of the tunnel, and the only thing that pulled me out of a deeply depressed state was the resumption of active concert activities and the creation of music, ”Katrīna Gupalo shares her experience.

“Only after a while, looking back at my thoughts and feelings, I could easily perceive it – as a normal stage in creative growth. But if I weren’t a fighter by nature, then maybe it could have ended differently. This situation made me remember my grandmother’s grandmother, Sofia, who dreamed of becoming a doctor, but when her husband forbade her, Sofia hung her in the attic of her house. “

The song “Agony” tells about the last breath of love – about the last moment before the inevitable divorce. It’s a moment of sweet bitterness towards the morning, when the party is almost over and everyone is scattered. When you want to sleep so much, but are afraid to fall asleep, because in the morning everything will be different, so with the last effort you desperately try to stick to a reality that no longer has a future.

With its help, the video’s creative team wants to draw attention to the obvious public mental health problems caused by the year we lived in the shadow of the pandemic, which affect each of us. There are so many different difficulties and challenges posed by this ruthless time. Especially now, when the opportunities for face-to-face contact with loved ones have been limited for a long time, the boundaries between the work, home and school environment have been sharply demolished and we have to try our best to deal with everything. There are also no traditional resources available to deal not only with everyday worries, but also with joy and energy.

Katrīna Gupalo urges: “We urge everyone – women, men, children and teenagers – not to hide and not be ashamed that they are in greater or lesser difficulty, and to seek help before the situation worsens. In such moments, an open conversation with a friend, relative or a call to a crisis helpline can be very important. We also invite you to contact your loved ones more often to find out how they are doing, because such a call can provide not only joy, but also the necessary support. ”

The song lyrics and music are authored by Katrīna Gupalo, produced by Aleksandrs Volks. It was recorded at Wolk Recording Studios. The main role of the video is the musician Germans Superfins. Its director – Jānis Škapars, operator and editor – Oskars Lūsis. The video shows the costumes of four Latvian fashion designers and brands: “Amoralle”, Anna Gulbe (“Gia Riga”, “Klerr”), Baiba Tamane and Loreta Asermane. Stylist – Sandija Sadovska, make-up artist – Anita Intaite. It was filmed in several places in Saulkrasti – in the premises of the hotel “Villa Gaida” and Saulkrasti cultural center “Zvejniekciems” and by the sea, as well as in Riga – in the cafe “Cafe Leningrad” and the brewery “Ziemeļu Enkurs”.
