Music – The Elbphilharmonie celebrates its fifth birthday – culture

Hamburg (dpa) – Happy Birthday, Elphi: For its 5th birthday, Hamburg’s Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda (SPD) recognized the Elbphilharmonie as a “cultural beacon”.

“The Elbphilharmonie is much more than a successful concert hall. It creates meaning and brings people together. With the Elbphilharmonie, a cultural beacon has been created that makes all of Hamburg’s culture shine brighter,” said Brosda in Hamburg on Tuesday. As promised, the Elbphilharmonie has become “one of the best concert halls in the world” and has also attracted many people who have not been so enthusiastic about classical music up to now.

“The Elbphilharmonie is a wonderful concert hall that is particularly suitable for surround sound music,” said Alan Gilbert, chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. “Our program celebrates this miracle and the joy of experimentation that characterizes the Elbphilharmonie in its short but brilliant existence.”

For artistic director Christoph Lieben-Seutter, the Elbphilharmonie has “more than fulfilled” the high expectations placed in it. With 1.2 million visitors a year in the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle, the concert audience in Hamburg almost tripled. The plaza, the viewing platform at a height of 37 meters, is expecting its 15th millionth visitor in March.

After almost ten years of construction, the Elbphilharmonie opened on January 11, 2017 with a concert by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and a spectacular fireworks display. Up until the Corona standstill, around 2.7 million visitors had experienced almost 2,500 concerts in both halls. In the evening, the anniversary was to be celebrated with a concert by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under the direction of its chief conductor Alan Gilbert. The program includes works by John Adams and Esa-Pekka Salonen as well as the piano concerto by Thomas Adès. The concert will be streamed live at www.elbphilharmonie.de.
