Muscle Enlargement Steroids Damage Male Testicular Function

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Researchers found a relationship between consumption habits drug steroids to enlarge muscle with health reproduction Men. Recent studies have found that the use of muscle-enhancing steroid drugs can impair testicular function in men for years after stopping taking the drug.

“The results of this study indicate a long-lasting testicular dysfunction,” said study author Jon Rasmussen. CNN.

Study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism This involved 132 men aged 16-50 years who were diligent in doing recreational muscle strength training as participants.

The researcher divided the participants into three groups. The first group are those who have never used steroids. The second group are those currently using steroids. The third group were former steroid users who quit three years earlier.

Constantly fluctuating testosterone levels led researchers to use new markers to find indications of reduced testicular function. Researchers used serum insulin-like factor 3 (INSL-3), which is an artificial hormone made in the testes.

As a result, it was found that men who had used steroids had much lower concentrations of INSL-3 than the other groups. The longer the duration of steroid use, the lower the INSL-3 levels were found.

Anabolic steroids are artificial testosterone hormones made in the laboratory. The use of these steroids damages the hypothalamus-pituitary-testis hormonal axis, which can stop testosterone production and impair fertility.

“The recovery of this hormonal axis may take a long time or may not recover at all,” said Rasmussen.

The use of anabolic steroids has been linked to shrinkage of the testes, lower testosterone levels, decreased sex drive, low sperm count, erection problems, and breast growth in men.

The impact of anabolic steroid abuse goes beyond sexual distress. Muscle-enhancing steroids have been linked to other problems such as high blood pressure and cholesterol as well as an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Harvard Medical School sports medicine expert Shalender Bhasin says the list of side effects from using anabolic steroids is constantly increasing.

“There is a misperception that this drug is safe and the side effects can be managed somehow,” said Bhasin, who was not involved in the study.

Bhasin said most men who use anabolic steroids will have problems with testosterone and sperm production, depending on the duration of use.
