Municipalities tighten rules further: not more than two on the street NOW

Anyone who is in a group of three or more people in public space can be fined from Thursday. The presidents of the 25 security regions, which include all municipalities, determined this on Thursday.

The fine can therefore also be imposed if everyone within the group adheres to the rule of keeping 1.5 meters between themselves.

On Monday evening, the government had decided that special areas could be designated for which this rule would apply, but the 25 mayors who chair the security regions found this too unclear and so it was decided to tighten up the measures.

The stricter measure will take effect as soon as the 25 presidents of the security regions have signed the new emergency order. According to Hubert Bruls, mayor of Nijmegen and chairman of the Security Council, which includes all security regions, this will still take place on Thursday.

Families are the exception

An exception is made for families or households, says Bruls. “This is by far the easiest for enforcement,” Bruls explains. “There is no distinction between yoga groups or boys who play football. That cannot be maintained and cannot be understood.”

Young children who play outdoors should, under the new measures, be supervised by a parent or guardian.

The chairman of the Security Council explains that house parties can also be enforced. “If people have a party in a shed or student house, they can also intervene. This is an addition to something that had not yet been arranged.”
