Rostock / Berlin (dpa / mv) – In a city ranking, Rostock is in a mediocre position compared to major German cities and is only developing mediocre dynamically. In this year’s city ranking by the Institute for the German Economy (IW), “Wirtschaftswoche” and the Internet portal Immobilienscout24, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s only city with more than 100,000 inhabitants is in 44th place in terms of level and dynamics. It has future prospects even only reached 55th place out of 71 major cities examined.

The East German city with the best quality of life and the greatest economic power is Potsdam in 17th place. The front runner is Munich. Leipzig ranks 9th among the most dynamic cities, with Berlin at the top. When it comes to future prospects, Jena is the best city in the east in 5th place, with Darmstadt at the top.

Rostock was able to score points in a comparison of levels with the highest rate of children in nursery and kindergarten. In terms of the number of business start-ups, however, the Hanseatic city only ranks 66th. The level ranking evaluates the residential, living, working and economic situation in major German cities using 52 indicators. This also includes the commuter and engineering quotas as well as the amount of tax revenue.

In the dynamic ranking, Rostock stood out positively with a reduction in the number of Hartz IV recipients within the last five years. Private over-indebtedness also fell. According to this, however, crime has increased – Rostock ranks 67th out of the 71 major cities examined in this question.

According to the ranking, the Hanseatic city is less well equipped for the future. The future index tests how well German cities are prepared for future challenges, with research strength being named as a decisive factor. Rostock even ranks 9th among the research institutes, 32nd for the academic quota, but only 60th for patents.
