Municipalities are looking for space for vaccination centers

After the state government presented its vaccination strategy, preparations are now underway in cities and districts.

The administrations are working at full speed to carry out the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus. The effort is immense, it involves a total of eight million vaccinations. In Frankfurt and Darmstadt, people are thinking about locations, elsewhere the planning is not yet as advanced. A first overview.

In Frankfurt the airport and the trade fair are being discussed as locations for vaccination centers. However, this is not yet certain, according to the health department. “The talks with everyone involved are in full swing,” says Kirsten Gerstner, spokeswoman for health department head Stefan Majer (Greens). It is now a matter of dealing with a “huge logistical effort”. “The preparations have been going on for months, but the state ordinance now makes it concrete,” says Gerstner. There should be a decision in the coming days.

In Wiesbaden a vaccination center is to be set up. A working group of the administrative staff advises on potential locations. Results may be available on Wednesday.

In Darmstadt The plans to set up a vaccination center are already underway. As the city’s Covid-19 crisis team says, the fire brigade and health department are currently examining suitable properties and logistics in order to be “optimally prepared for an emergency order,” as the city announced. “We are facing this great task and are looking forward to it, because the prospect of a timely vaccination also means the prospect of an effective fight against the pandemic,” said Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens). It is clear that vaccinations against Covid-19 will actually start very soon.

In the Groß-Gerau district Internal discussions are also currently underway about a vaccination center. However, one wants to wait for the country’s specifications first, the press office announced on Monday when asked by FR.

In the Offenbach district there will be a vaccination center. In which city this should be set up is still open. “We are still in the early stages of planning, there is still no location,” said Sandra Klauß from the district’s press office. The health department and the disaster control authority would also have to deal intensively with the construction and logistics.

In the Main-Kinzig district, the most populous district of Hesse, with a vaccination rate of 60 percent, around 250,000 people are to be vaccinated within a short time, the district administration announced. Therefore, two vaccination centers are to be set up, according to the current status in Hanau and for the eastern district in Gelnhausen. More precise locations are not yet known. In the coming weeks, the district health department and disaster control of the district are to build the infrastructure, they say. Both institutions should also operate the centers. In addition, a mobile team is to be set up to visit facilities with high-risk patients, for example in retirement and nursing homes.

In the city of Offenbach it is still open where exactly a vaccination center could be built. “We only received the order from the state government this morning. We can’t say anything exactly yet, ”explained Mayor Felix Schwenke (SPD) when asked by FR. According to Schwenke, disaster control will set up the necessary structures. The vaccination center should then be ready for operation in mid-December.
