Municipal councils behind closed doors

Quebec municipalities will exceptionally have the right to hold council meetings with elected officials behind closed doors.

This is what the Quebec government decreed following a ministerial decree published on Sunday.

Municipalities who so wish can therefore hold the sessions without the presence of citizens. And elected officials who wish can participate by telephone or videoconference.

These measures are aimed at stemming the spread of COVID-19.

“I strongly encourage all municipalities in Quebec to take advantage of the opportunities available to them so that the municipal council can continue to make the decisions necessary for the operation of the municipality, without compromising the health of elected officials, employees and citizens . I remind you that this is an exceptional measure, the application of which will be temporary, “said Minister of Municipal Affairs Andrée Laforest, in a press release.

“Municipalities have a duty to use it in order to participate in efforts to slow down the contagion,” she added.
