Munich: American sends stolen beer mug back to Hofbräuhaus

After more than half a century, a 73-year-old American has returned a mug that she stole as a young woman to the famous Hofbräuhaus in Munich. The earthenware jug arrived completely unexpectedly by post last week, said spokesman Tobias Ranzinger. “On December 27th, she sent the jug out, and we received it last Thursday – intact and with a nice card,” said Ranzinger.

The Hofbräuhaus published the message about receiving the jug on Facebook.

“I took the stone jug from her house in the summer of 1965 when I was wild, ruthless, and thoughtless,” wrote the woman from Maryland, handwritten on the card. “I’m sorry I didn’t return it earlier.”

The card was signed with the name Celeste. What prompted the woman to return it late remained a mystery to the Hofbräuhaus. “Your motivation is unclear, but we are pleased that people have had a connection to our house for so long,” said Ranzinger.

The 73-year-old should now receive an invitation to free beer.
