Moomin Character Removed From Exhibition Amid Racism concerns
A character from teh beloved Moomin stories, Stinky, has been removed from display in some areas of an exhibition due to concerns it could be interpreted as a racist symbol. rolef Curström, CEO of Moomin Characters, confirmed that a supporter raised the issue, prompting the library to remove Stinky from large wall showcases, though the character remains visible in the original books on display.
The exhibition, which drew a significant audience this summer, showcases illustrations of the Moomin Valley characters and details about the work of Tove Jansson, the creator of the Moomins. Curström stated the library informed them of the decision via email, to which they responded with acceptance, viewing the situation as a healthy public discussion.
“We consider it a healthy public discussion. If such changes are requested, we have no objections,” Curström said. He noted this is the first time in the 80-year history of the Moomins that the characterS imagery has faced such scrutiny.
Curström emphasized Jansson’s commitment to tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion, while acknowledging and respecting American sensitivities surrounding the conversation. Sirke Happonen, a researcher specializing in Moomin books, expressed surprise at the removal, calling it “frankly absurd.”
Happonen believes the criticism likely stems from Stinky’s appearance and maintains the character is not racist, suggesting the decision reflects a broader unfamiliarity with the Moomin stories. “If anyone thinks Stinky is racist, he has not read comics. I doubt whether the critic knows Moomin stories at all,” she stated.
Stinky is portrayed as a mischievous and often feared figure in Moomin Valley, yet is also a beloved character known for his playful actions. The debate highlights the evolving interpretations of classic literature in a contemporary context.
