MTA Celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month with Comprehensive Public Engagement Campaign

NEW YORK — On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced it is celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month with a comprehensive public engagement campaign at New York City Transit (NYCT), Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Bridges and Tunnels to communicate with customers and employees about the importance of Pride and its message of diversity and inclusion throughout the transit system. The MTA celebrated the announcement Tuesday with a musical performance by Cyre in Union Square.

Throughout the month of June, customers riding the transit system via subway, bus, and commuter rail will see Pride messages and information, including special limited-edition 2023 Pride posters on display, trains decorated with Pride-themed decals, commemorative Pride MetroCards available for purchase at vending machines at select stations and special Pride-themed public events. The MTA continues to be the best way to get to all Pride events in the metro area.

“The MTA is committed to delivering the message of equality and love in celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month to riders, and we are proud that that is heard loud and clear throughout the metro area,” said Shanifah Rieara, acting director of service to the MTA customer. “Customers throughout the MTA operating region will be able to celebrate all month long and feel welcome on public transportation no matter where they live through banners, stickers, banners, public events and much more.”

Around town, 50,000 Pride-themed MetroCards are now available to purchase while supplies last at vending machines located at six subway stations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

  • 74 – Broadway / Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av

  • Christopher St – Sheridan Square

During LGBTQ+ Pride Month, customers can ride trains decorated with Pride stickers throughout the transit system. 50 subway cars along the lines and through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx. 50 Metro-North cars, 50 LIRR cars, and 50 Bridge and Tunnel Maintenance cars with special Pride decals.

“I wholeheartedly support the upcoming LGBTQ+ Pride Month celebration and the MTA’s public engagement campaign,” said New York State Senator Nathalia Fernandez. “It is essential to communicate the importance of Pride and its message of inclusion throughout the transit system. Announcement of commemorative MetroCards, signs and stickers, and special Pride-themed events demonstrate the MTA’s commitment to promoting diversity and equality. I encourage community members to actively participate in campaign activities and events throughout the month. Let’s work together to create a society that respects and values ​​every individual, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Banners celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month will be on display at select subway stations and platforms on the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road throughout the month of June. This year’s Pride-specific limited edition posters will be available for purchase at the NY Transit Museum and online.

Digital screens aboard the tube, buses and inside stations will play 15-second videos celebrating Pride Month at regular intervals. In partnership with Amtrak, LIRR passengers will also see a Pride 2023 graphic on digital screens in Moynihan Train Hall.

The fun continues with special events during Pride month. MTA employees, including New York City Transit Chairman Richard Davey, will march in the 2023 New York City LGBTQ+ Pride Parade taking place on Sunday, June 25.

“Pride Month is when we all come together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community,” said Assemblyman Kenny Burgos. “During this month of remembrance, it is imperative that we continue to raise awareness in support of their rights and inclusion. I applaud the MTA for launching this campaign and standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ people.”
