Calls Mount for Prince Andrew to Relinquish Title amid Epstein Links and Security Concerns
Pressure is intensifying on Prince andrew to fully renounce his royal title, despite already stepping back from public duties and relinquishing his military affiliations. The renewed scrutiny stems from his continued association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as reported connections to alleged Chinese spies, prompting calls for greater transparency and a reassessment of his privileges.
The debate centers on whether Andrew can remain ”Prince Andrew” while having largely withdrawn from royal life. While he has agreed to cease using his HRH style and has voluntarily given up his knighthood as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) and his Garter role as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, a 1917 law established by George V stipulates that a son of a monarch automatically holds the title of prince. This legal framework complicates efforts to wholly strip him of the title.
Labour MP Sarah Owen, chair of the women and equalities select committee, emphasized public concern over the allegations against Andrew. “Many people will be less concerned about royal titles and rightly more concerned about the horrific things Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been accused of,” Owen told The Times. “While there’s traditionally been a lot of affection for other members of the royal family, that good faith can’t be taken for granted in Andrew’s case. Whether it’s his reported close ties with alleged Chinese spies or friendship with Epstein, the British public deserve total transparency to judge for themselves if Andrew is fit to retain the title ‘prince’ and all the privilege that goes along with it.”
downing Street has maintained a hands-off approach, stating the matter is for the royal family to resolve. A spokesperson for the prime minister affirmed support for King Charles’s judgment, noting that Andrew has already confirmed he won’t use his titles. The spokesperson also denied any government apprehension regarding a potential backlash from the royal family, stating, “The government isn’t scared of anyone or anything.”
Despite the calls for a complete title removal, Andrew will continue to be known as Prince Andrew under the existing 1917 law, though his HRH status remains temporarily suspended. The situation highlights the complex interplay between legal precedent, public opinion, and the evolving role of the monarchy.
