National mourning for the victims declared in Kazakhstan

The Kazakh authorities reported the deaths of 18 security officials. More than 5 thousand people were detained during the riots.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev declared January 10 a day of national mourning in the republic. On Sunday, January 9, reports TASS with reference to the press secretary of Tokayev Berik Uali.

“In connection with the numerous human casualties as a result of tragic events in a number of regions of the country, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev decided to declare January 10, 2022 a day of national mourning. The corresponding decree will be published on Akorda’s website,” Uali said.

At the same time, Kazakhstani law enforcement officials stated that they would conduct a large-scale investigation of the causes of the riots in the country, and the results would be provided to the world community. The corresponding statement was made on Monday, January 10, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic.

The situation in Kazakhstan escalated on January 2, when rallies began in Zhanaozen (a city in the Mangistau region, in the west of the country) against a sharp increase in prices for liquefied gas. They then escalated into massive protests across the country with economic and political demands. Later on 4 and 5 January, protesters clashed with security forces in Almaty.

On the morning of January 5, the President of Kazakhstan dismissed the government. A state of emergency was introduced in the country. The President of Kazakhstan appealed to the leaders of the CSTO countries for help. On Thursday, the CSTO reported that they had made a decision to send peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan. On January 7, the President of Kazakhstan to restore order in the cities allowed police and military personnel to open fire without warning.

We will remind, in Kazakhstan during the protests killed at least 164 people, including two children. Most of the dead are in Almaty.
