“Mourinho Gives Europa League Runners-Up Medal to Fan After Sevilla Defeat”

José Mourinho experienced something unprecedented in his career this Wednesday: losing a major Uefa tournament final, disregarding the Super Cups. After the defeat on penalties of the Roma for the Sevilla in the Europa League final, the Portuguese coach presented his silver medal to a fan in the stands of the Puskás Arena, in Budapest.

In the press conference after the final, Mourinho indicated his desire to remain at Roma to fulfill the last year of his contract. And he complained about the refereeing of the Englishman Anthony Taylor, who ordered Montiel’s charge back in the maximum penalties – Rui Patrício caught the Argentine’s beat, but the judge indicated that he was ahead; the Sevilla winger then converted on the replay and secured the title for the Spanish club.

– I want to stay, but my players deserve more. And I deserve more too. I’m a little tired of being the technician, the communication guy, the one who says we’ve been ripped off. I want to be in a position where I can deliver more. Next season we won’t play the Champions League, which is good news. It is a paradox, but we are not yet a Champions League team – declared Mourinho.

The Portuguese was trying for his third Europa League title. He was champion with Porto (2003) and Manchester United (2017). In addition to these trophies, the Special One it also has the two Champions Leagues won with Porto (2004) and Inter Milan (2010).

His fifth European conquest was the Conference League, last season, with Roma. The tournament is the third largest in UEFA.

In the European curriculum, Mourinho lost all three European Super Cups that he played in his career, always in different teams: Porto, in 2003; Chelsea, in 2013; and Manchester United in 2017).

Success of Portuguese coaches began with José Mourinho

Mourinho was trying for his sixth European competition title. Had he achieved the goal, he would have matched Alex Ferguson and Giovanni Trapattoni. He remains on par with Zinedine Zidane, Bob Paisley and Pep Guardiola, who are in this year’s Champions League final with Manchester City.

Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti, of Real Madrid, is the record holder with eight continental trophies.
