Mount Sinabung eruption activity is still happening, yesterday it erupted 7 times

KOMPAS.com – After two eruptions on August 8, 2020, Mount Sinabung re-erupted several times.

According to the records of the Geological Agency of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Mount Sinabung erupts twice on 10 August 2020.

This eruption produced a gray-white eruption column 200-5,000 meters high from the top.

Then yesterday (13/8/2020) until 21.41 WIB, Mount Sinabung erupted seven times.

This eruption produced a medium intensity gray eruption column with a maximum column height of 2,000 meters from the top of the peak. The eruption column was observed moving to the east, southeast, and south of the mountain.

Like most volcanic eruptions, they are always accompanied by seismic activity.

The types of earthquakes recorded from August 8 to 12 were 4 eruptive earthquakes, 86 gusts of earthquakes, 2 tornillo earthquakes, 15 low frequency earthquakes, 99 deep volcanic earthquakes, 3 local tectonic earthquakes, 7 distant tectonic earthquakes, and continuous tremors.

Meanwhile, in the series of eruptions that occurred yesterday (13/8/2020), it was dominated by continuous tremors with a maximum amplitude of 0.5-15 mm (dominant 3 mm).

From this data, PVMBG said that a series of continuous tremors showed that the magma migration process was still happening from inside to the surface.

“The series of eruptions on August 13, 2020 and the character of the eruptions indicate that there is a potential for an explosive eruption to produce hot clouds of eruption,” added the Head of PVMBG Kasbani in an official statement received by Kompas.com, Friday (14/8/2020).

Given the nature and character of the current eruption of Mount Sinabung, which is an eruption in conjunction with a hot cloud, the dangerous threat is heavy ash rain around the summit and slopes of Mount Sinabung.

Ash material can be carried further from the summit, depending on wind direction and speed.

Kasbani concluded that Mount Sinabung eruption activity will continue to occur.

“However, the potential danger of the distribution of eruption products and hot cloud glides is still within the recommended disaster-prone radius,” he said.

Currently, the level of activity of Mount Sinabung is Level III (SIAGA). This Alert Status has not changed since May 20, 2019.

Because they are in Alert status, Kasbani urges the public and visitors or tourists not to carry out activities in the villages that have been relocated, as well as locations within a radial radius of 3 km from the top of Mount Sinabung, and a sectoral radius of 5 km for the south-east sector, and 4 km for the east-north sector.
