Motorist drives into group of protesters in New York | Abroad

Images of the incident have surfaced on Twitter. The injuries are not life-threatening, according to police. The driver of the car has been arrested.

The protesters left Times Square on foot and by bike. It was a nonviolent protest march to support immigrants held in prison.

“We walked across the intersection,” protester Sofia Vickerman emotionally told AP news agency. “The car drove our way. Very quick. I saw it hit at least six people. Protesters who did nothing wrong at all. I had to jump away from a bike that was launched my way.”

Note: shocking images of the collision.

Footage shows panic breaking out among a group of about 50 protesters after the BMW drives through the crowd. The group is said to have surrounded the car before the incident. Suddenly, the motorist accelerated hard, injuring the demonstrators.

The New York police are questioning the woman. A motive is not yet known.
