Motor vehicle insurance: Type classes for 2022 will change for almost eleven million motorists – lines of business

The German Insurance Association (GDV) has recalculated the type classes for around 32,000 different car models. Even according to the new type class statistics, major reclassifications remained rather the exception. In motor vehicle liability insurance, the type classes of the previous year are retained for almost three quarters of the cars. This affects around 30.3 million drivers.

Only a few models are concerned with more than one class up or down. For example, the Kia E-Niro, Nissan Juke 1.0 (type F16, since 2019), Peugeot 508 SW 2.2 HDI, Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI and the VW E-Golf VII (type AU, since 2016) have each improved by two classes. At the same time, the Hyundai Kona 1.6 T (type OS, since 2017) has deteriorated by two type classes.

With fully comprehensive insurance, the type classes will change for around 43 percent of vehicle owners. Four out of ten insured persons (40 percent) can look forward to lower ratings. After all, this affects around 9.5 million vehicles. Only three percent of those with fully comprehensive insurance move into a higher class. This affects around 660,000 cars.

In the case of partially comprehensive insurance, the classifications remain unchanged for almost two thirds of drivers (64 percent). A third of those insured with partial comprehensive insurance (32 percent) receive a low type class. About 4.1 million vehicle owners can look forward to this. At the same time, four percent of motorists have to accept a higher classification. That affects around 490,000 vehicles.

There are high ratings for many high-powered luxury-class models and SUVs, including the Audi Q8 50 TDI Quattro (type 4L, since 2018), BMW M5 XDrive, Range Rover Velar 20D AWD (type LY, since 2017) and Tesla Model X Older models and small cars such as the Kia Picanto 1.0 (type JA, since 2017) or the Skoda Citigo-E (type AA, since 2019) – all of them small cars – are rated comparatively low.

Only for a few models was there more than one class up or down. For example, the Opel Combo-E Life 1.2 improved by one level in fully comprehensive insurance and by two levels in partial comprehensive insurance. In contrast, the Range Rover Velar 30D AWD, for example, worsened by two classes in both fully comprehensive and partially comprehensive insurance. Type classes: Classification by accident statistics

The higher the classification of the type class, the more expensive the car insurance is. In the calculations of the fully comprehensive insurance, the insurance benefits for damage to your own car after self-inflicted accidents and for partially comprehensive damage are included. These include damage from car theft, glass damage, accidents involving wildlife or damage from natural events. For the statistics of the partially comprehensive insurance, only partially comprehensive damage is considered.

To this end, the GDV determines a damage balance for around 32,000 different car models every year. If less damage is reported compared to the last three years, the model is classified in a lower class. It’s the other way around. The classification is not binding for insurance companies, but can be implemented in new contracts and for existing contracts with immediate effect. As a rule, the type class applies from January 1, 2022.
