MotoGP: Miguel Oliveira’s historic triumph, an unforgettable definition and a disconcerted reporter

The Portuguese pilot Miguel Oliveira (KTM-Tech3) achieved a surprising triumph this Sunday at the Styrian Grand Prix of MotoGP, beating the Australian in the last corner Jack Miller (Ducati-Pramac) and Spanish Pol Espargaró (KTM).

After the race was interrupted by an accident without consequences from the Spanish Maverick Viñales (Yamaha), Oliveira, 25, remained in the leading trio and remained expectant amid the fight between Espargaró and Miller.

Before the interruption of the race after 15 laps, it seemed that the victory would go to the Spanish Joan Mir (Suzuki), finally 4th. But at the restart, Espargaró and Miller escaped before being caught up by Oliveira, who passed them at the finish line.

The French Fabio Quartararo remains leader of the World Cup with three points of advantage over the Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati).

Oliveira’s victory, beyond its surprising nature, had the historical value that it was the first of all time for a Portuguese rider in the highest category of world motorcycling.

This Sunday was also the first victory for the Tech3 team, KTM satellite, in the premier category of motorcycling.

“I am very excited right now. I would like to say many things but I am at a loss for words,” said the Portuguese, grateful to his team and his family. “Today history has been written for my country,” he said.

In other categories, Spanish Jorge Martin (Kalex) failed to get his second straight win in Moto2 by exceeding the limits of the circuit at turn eight of the last lap and being penalized with the loss of a position, which gave the victory to the Italian Marco Bezzecchi (Kalex), with the Australian Remy Gardner (Kalex) third.

The Italian Celestino Vietti (KTM) also achieved its first world championship victory by winning the race of Moto3 ahead of his compatriot Tony Arbolino (Honda) and Japanese Ai Ogura (Honda).

Argentine Gabriel Rodrigo (Honda) qualified in fourth place after starting from pole position. The pilot born in Catalonia and nationalized Argentine added thirteen points for the general classification, after reaching 1,182 seconds behind Vietti.

The Spanish Albert Arenas (KTM), who finished fifth in the second round on Austrian lands, continues to be world leader with 25 points ahead of the Japanese Ogura and 39 over the British John McPhee (Honda), who suffered a fall and didn’t score a single point.
