JAKARTA Stretch mark are curved lines that appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks, or elsewhere on the body. Stretch marks are not painful or dangerous, but some people don’t like the look of their skin.

However, stetch mark in pregnancy and postnatal keloids can be prevented and even treated. Skin and genital specialist, dr. Yasmina D. Kumala said stretch marks or in medical language known as atrophic striae is a condition in which the appearance of dangling lines on the skin.

Stretch marks generally appear on the abdomen, breast , hips, buttocks, and thighs. According to dr. Yasmina, the symptoms of stretch marks vary, depending on the length of time the stretch marks occur. These include lines identified on the skin, ranging in color from pink, red, to brown, light colored lines, which can fade lighter with time.

“This is due to stretching of the skin, usually occurs in people who have low collagen levels. The severity depends on many factors, one of which is genetic,” said dr. Yasmina during a live Instagram entitled Pregnancy which leaves a mark on the skin: Stretch marks and Keloid guided by dr. Lula Kamal, Friday (26/3).

The doctor who practices at Bunda Margonda Hospital in Depok added that pregnancy can be a factor, but don’t forget other factors, namely genetics (heredity), obesity, drastic weight changes, having received corticosteroid treatment, and other factors.

“The incidence of women experiencing stretch marks is twice as much as men, although both can experience and are influenced by individual risk factors,” explained dr. Yasmina.

“Some people may think that stretch marks can interfere with appearance, but overall stretch marks are not dangerous,” he continued.
