Mother Orlando (17) in court: ‘the anger gets worse every day’

Orlando dated Roy B. two years ago in his floating fisherman’s cottage. Then the 17-year-old boy ended up in the icy water. How he got there, and why, is still not clear. For the time being, research has shown that B. saw the boy lying in the water, but left him there. Even when Boldewijn was searched for days by his family and friends, B. kept quiet.

The mother of Orlando very much resents him. “You’ve watched his hands cramp, how he begged for help until the bubbles disappeared,” she said this afternoon.

No help sought

Police tracked down B. through the dating app Grindr, which they had used. Boldewijn’s body was exactly below where the floating fisherman’s house had been. B. had moved it after Orlando’s visit. B. said in court today that he can remember nothing of that.

The Public Prosecution Service accuses B. of failing to assist or seek help from the boy. B. had previously stated that he had seen the boy from Rotterdam struggling that night in the icy water near his houseboat. Now he just said that he was sure that he “heard or saw something that night.” That he didn’t call 112 was because he was panicking. One thing B. knew for sure: “I didn’t hurt that boy. Nothing at all.”

Orlando’s mother said this afternoon that Orlando did not go swimming herself that night anyway. He did not have a swimming diploma. “Several times a week I dream about Orlando and see him crying in the water crying for my help, but I can’t get to him. Eventually I see him drown over and over and then I wake up. It keeps me up every day and night still busy. ”

‘Loss is getting worse every day’

“The anger that there was someone who could save my child, who could get help but decided not to do this is getting worse every day. The loss is getting worse every day.”

Orlando was very much loved, his mother said. “He brought a smile back to many people when they were struggling, he was a listening ear when someone was struggling. Orlando was a boy with a good heart and will be remembered as a happy, fun, sweet and smart boy. A boy full of confidence, with so many ambitions, dreams, he wanted to discover the world so much. He was full of positivity and the best part was his beautiful smile, a smile that was always present. ”

B: “Can’t help it”

Orlando’s mother hopes that B. will be punished for leaving her child as a ‘piece of dirt’ and then hiding it from the police. B. reacted briefly to those allegations: “I am really sorry about what happened, but I really can’t help it.”
