Moscow wants a review of sanctions to open Ukrainian ports

Russia urges that the sanctions imposed on it be reviewed if it hears the UN’s call for access to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, Reuters reported, citing Interfax.

Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain producers, exported most of its goods through its seaports. However, since the beginning of the Russian invasion, it has been forced to export by train or through its small ports on the Danube.

Yesterday, the head of the World Food Program (WFP) David Beasley appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, insisting: “If you have a heart at all, please open these ports.”

The global food program feeds about 125 million people and buys 50% of the grain from Ukraine.

The war blocked much of Ukraine’s grain exports

Today, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko responded to Beasley: “You must not only make this appeal to the Russian Federation, but also examine in depth the whole range of reasons that led to the current food crisis, first and foremost these are sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States and the European Union that impede normal free tradeincluding foodstuffs, including wheat, fertilizers and others “.

Russia’s decision to send troops to Ukraine almost three months ago prevented Kyiv from using its main ports in the Black and Azov Seas, which led to a drop in its grain exports this month by more than half compared to a year earlier.

Russia and Ukraine together account for almost a third of global wheat exports. Ukraine is also a major exporter of corn, barley, sunflower oil and rapeseed oil.
