Morocco-third country free trade agreements: in 2019, imports from Turkey jumped 23%

Imports from Morocco made under free trade agreements (FTAs) in 2019 are almost stable and stand at 151.7 billion dirhams (MMDH), according to the Exchange Office.

Imports under the agreement with the European Union still represent the essential component of imports from Morocco benefiting from preferential arrangements with a share of 72.4%, specifies the Office in its annual report on Morocco’s foreign trade in 2019, noting that these imports amounted to 109.8 MMDH in 2019 instead of 110.3 MMDH in 2018.

The breakdown of these imports by country reveals that in 2019, Spain, France and Germany predominate this agreement with respective shares of 24.5%, 19.4% and 12.1%, continues the report. .

The agreement with Turkey, meanwhile, ranks second with 12.6% of total imports under FTAs, adds the report, noting that related imports amount to 19.1 billion dirhams. up 3.6 MMDH compared to 2018, mainly boosted by the increase in purchases of semi-finished products in iron or non-alloy steel as well as that of wires, bars, and profiles in iron or steel.

In third position is the Morocco-United States agreement with a share of 9.6%, thus yielding its second rank of 2018 to Turkey. Imports benefiting from the terms of this agreement fell to 14.6 billion dirhams following the drop in imports of maize by 1.6 billion dirhams and of coal, cokes and similar solid fuels by 1.2 billion dirhams.

Imports benefiting from the Agadir agreement and those made with the member countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) successively represent 3.8% and 1.6% of total imports under the agreements of free trade, adds the Office.
