morocco to Invest $15 Billion in Health and Education for 2026
RABAT – Morocco will allocate 140 billion dirhams ($15 billion USD) to it’s health and education sectors in 2026, an 18% increase over the previous year’s budget, Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah Alaoui announced Sunday, october 19.
The investment will focus on improving health infrastructure, including the completion of the Ibn Sina University Hospital Center in Rabat and the launch of new University Hospital Centers in agadir and Laâyoune. In education, the government plans to accelerate the expansion of preschool education, strengthen student support services, and improve overall educational quality.
The budget increase comes amid recent protests by Moroccan youth concerned about government spending priorities, specifically the allocation of funds towards major sporting events like the 2025 CAN and the 2030 World Cup. “What we have heard from the youth protests is that they want better education and better health,” Alaoui stated during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, held October 13-18, 2025.
Currently, approximately 9% of Morocco’s GDP is dedicated to funding education and health annually. The government intends to extend social protection and implement a social assistance program benefiting 4 million households.
