Moroccans reduce work time by 23% during Ramadan

According to the latest national survey on time use carried out by the HCP, Moroccans reduce the time devoted to their professional work by nearly 23%. This reduction is 1h12mn for men and 19mn for women. On the other hand, the time spent on household errands and domestic activities is longer compared to normal periods, particularly in cities and among women (+47 minutes).

Household consumption habits also change during the holy month. According to the latest survey on household consumption expenditure, carried out by the HCP in 2013/2014, consumption expenditure per household appreciates by 16.3%, on average, during the holy month of Ramadan. Almost 82% of this increase is attributable to food expenses. Households spend, on average, more than a third more on food (+ 37%) compared to other months of the year.

This increase in food expenditure affects all categories of the population and increases as one moves up the standard of living scale (varies from 22.5% to more than 40% between the two extreme social classes). The products which contribute the most to this additional expenditure are fruits (+ 163%), meats (+ 35%), cereals (+ 35%), milk and dairy products (+ 47%).

Spending on non-food products increased by 4.6%, driven in particular by the 20% increase in “transport and communication” expenses and + 3.7% in “housing and energy” expenses. ”. On the other hand, spending on clothing fell by 13%, on average, during this holy month, especially in rural areas (-17.3%).
