A cleaner of the Moroccan king Mohammed VI has been sentenced to fifteen years in prison for stealing 36 expensive watches, writes news agency AFP.
The 46-year-old woman cleaned in one of the royal palaces. She has melted some of the gold watches and sold them to dealers. She has sold the other watches intact.
Fourteen men who were involved in the gold trade were also convicted in the case. They were given prison sentences of at least four years for this. They were arrested at the end of last year and also suspected of participating in a criminal gang. However, they deny that they knew about the theft.
One of these men has been detained for 15 years because he is seen as the woman’s henchman.
King Mohammed VI is one of the richest monarchs in the world. He would have more than 2 billion euros in assets. Some of his watches would be worth around a million euros.
