Morlais artist Elso exhibits in New York



Elso, 35, Nicolas Douguet for civil status, has set up his Morlais workshop a few steps from the apartment where he spent his childhood. His living space houses his works produced with patience, consistency and thoroughness. His speciality ? Collage, a technique of artistic creation which consists in making a plastic work by the combination of elements of various kinds: more or less flat materials, painting or drawing, newspaper extracts with text and photos, wallpaper, documents.

From rap to collage

After raping in high school, selling kebabs and writing novels, First found its way in 2017, “the day I had fun gluing cut pieces of paper with scissors, a scalpel or a cutter, that the eyes of others encouraged me and that I sold my first two works in August 2018 ”. His first exhibitions took place in Morlaix (29), rue de Paris at Cut Vinyle, in the Passage 1522 and Couleur des arts galleries. His very personal style with his superheroes was quickly noticed and his compositions were requested from Lorient, Hennebont, Belle-Isle-en-Terre, Lamballe and Locquirec to be exhibited there.

I even have some of my works acquired by individuals who are in Rabat, Sydney and Stuttgart.

For two years, his paintings have been presented in Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, La Rochelle and Montluçon. At the same time, he joined the group of artists PTL which gave him the opportunity to exhibit in Tournai, Belgium. “I even have some of my works acquired by individuals who are in Rabat, Sydney and Stuttgart”.

A horizon beyond the Atlantic

In parallel to her life as a creative artist, Elso offers courses in youth centers and MJCs, “it gives me the opportunity to pass on my passion for collage and then, it allows me to pay my bills”. His collaboration for a year with the artist Sitelle, from Clermont-Ferrand, opens up a horizon beyond the Atlantic. “We posted our shared and personal works on Instagram. My work was then noticed by the Van Der Plas gallery in New York which let me know by saying: “We like what you do”. There you go, I’m now exhibiting in New York, it’s crazy! “.

Transported by a specialized long-distance carrier, his work arrived in New York in the heart of Manhattan. It is on display until December 19. Closer, the Bretons can appreciate the art of Elso in Taulé (29) until December 30.
