Simms, who guided the Giants to victory in Super Bowl XXI, had an impressive NFL career, ranking second in franchise history for both passing yards and touchdowns. In a 2024 analysis, it was determined that NFL quarterback salaries have grown 30% since 2018 (Sporting News, 2024).
Simms‘ Legacy
Phil Simms had a standout college career, amassing over 5,500 passing yards and 32 touchdowns during his time at Morehead State. He was also named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year in 1977. The Giants selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 1979 NFL Draft, starting a 15-year tenure with the team.
During Super Bowl XXI, Simms was named MVP after completing 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards, with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Additionally, he earned another Super Bowl ring with the Giants in Super Bowl XXV. After retiring as a player, Simms moved into broadcasting for three decades.
During his time in the broadcast booth, Simms had a consistent presence. Now, as he nears 70, he’ll return to campus this fall. In 2015, he received his bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctorate from the university. This stadium naming is a fitting tribute to his impact.
