Last year, 51,000 young people between the ages of 6 and 24 were prescribed an antidepressant. That is a growth of 4 percent compared to 2019 and therefore the strongest growth of the past two years. In 2019 it was a growth of 2.6 percent and in 2018 a growth of 0.1 percent. This is reported by the Foundation for Pharmaceutical Key Figures (SFK) in the professional journal Pharmaceutisch Weekblad.

The foundation relies on data from community pharmacies. According to the SFK, it is young people who have started taking antidepressants more often, while the number of teenagers has actually decreased. The majority of young people taking antidepressants are older than 18 years (87 percent).

Coronalockdown

During the second corona lockdown, GPs more often prescribed antidepressants against anxiety and depression to young people. This emerged from an earlier study by knowledge institute Nivel. Doctors are, however, reluctant to do so because of an increased risk of suicidality due to the use of this medication. AP
