More women than ever at the wheel of heavy goods vehicles in the USA

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) has just released its annual report on industry trends.

One of the highlights of this document is the fact that more women than ever are employed as truck drivers, reaching 7.8% of the total workforce.

The report also highlights the impact COVID-19 has had on the industry, which carried 10.23 billion tonnes of cargo last year, up from 11.84 billion tonnes the year before. The industry generated US $ 732 billion in revenue and transported 70.9% of surface trade between Canada and the United States.

The trucking industry employed 7.65 million Americans, including 3.36 million truckers. Small businesses continue to dominate the industry, with 91.5% of fleets having six or less trucks and 97.4% using fewer than 20.

“We knew the pandemic had had a significant impact on our industry, but this year’s data shows that despite these challenges, the trucking industry remains the lifeblood of our nation – delivering essential goods and potentially saving lives by a time of great need, ”said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello.
