The junta, which took control of Mali in August, agreed to a one-and-a-half-year transition period in talks on the country’s next organization. On August 18, a group of officers overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keit and took power. In Bamako, to date, about 100 representatives of the army, political parties and civil society have discussed the future arrangements for three days.
They wrote a charter, which, according to AFP, has not yet been published, but which provides for a transitional period of 18 months. The country is headed by a president elected by a committee that sets up the junta. According to the document, both a soldier and a civilian can be president and lead the country until elections are held.
