More than a million children will receive vaccines against polio, measles and rubella

EL NUEVO DIARIO, SANTO DOMINGO.- The health authorities began this Wednesday a vaccination campaign against polio, measles and rubella aimed at the child population between 1 and 5 years of age, just over a million, with a view to maintain the control and eradication of these diseases in the country.

The Minister of Public Health, Daniel Rivera, announced that during the ten-day campaign, 951,554 children in the aforementioned age group will be vaccinated against measles, rubella and congenital rubella syndrome, through of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI).

In addition, some 189,515 two-year-olds will receive a dose of the oral polio vaccine, a disease that has not been reported in the country since 1985, “but is still at risk of importation due to the migratory flow,” he said.

These preventive actions will be carried out in the more than 1,430 vaccination points scattered throughout the country, between fixed posts for this purpose, Comprehensive Early Childhood Care Centers (CAIPI), in mobile posts and house to house.

The initiative has the support of the Dominican Society of Pediatrics and other specialized medical societies to achieve a greater reach in the child population.

The High Quality Follow-up Vaccination Campaign is being carried out in several countries of the region on the recommendation of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) due to the high risk of measles outbreaks, a disease of which 869,770 were registered, the Highest number in 23 years.
