More than 5,000 infections per day on average

The corona numbers are also bullish at all levels on Wednesday. On average there are more than 5,000 new cases, 152 hospital admissions and 18 deaths per day. There are currently 1,621 people in hospital with covid-19.

For example, an average of 5,057 new corona infections per day were confirmed in Belgium between 4 and 10 October, according to preliminary figures from health institute Sciensano. That is an increase of 93 percent compared to the seven days before. 173,240 people have been infected since the start of the epidemic.

In two weeks time, Belgium found 467.8 corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants. That figure, the incidence figure, currently reveals differences between Wallonia (586 per 100,000) and Brussels (800) on the one hand and Flanders (259) on the other. Already predicts professor of biostatistics Geert Molenberghs (UHasselt, KU Leuven) that it is only a matter of time before Flanders follows Wallonia. ‘The universities in Flanders started a week later’ and the infections mainly occur in people in their twenties.

The number of hospitalizations also continues to increase: between 7 and 13 October, an average of 152 people were admitted to hospital per day, an increase of 81 percent compared to the previous period. There are currently 1,621 corona patients in Belgian hospitals, including 281 in intensive care.

Between 4 and 10 October, an average of 18 people a day died from the effects of an infection. Meanwhile, 10,244 people have died of Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic.

The positivity ratio – the number of people who test positive in relation to the total number of tests – has increased to 11.7 percent.

The last known r-value is that of October 12, when it was 1.4. This means that an infected person infects an average of 1.5 people with the corona virus. That figure also continues to rise.
