(CNN) — It is official: millennials o Millennials and people from the younger generations now make up more than half of the American population.
The data, which was published by the Census Bureau last month and analyzed by the Brookings Institution, reveal that the 166 million Americans under the age of 40 (millennials, Generation Z and younger generations) represented 50.7% of the population, as of July 2019. There are 162 million Americans in the combined cohorts of Generation X , the Baby Boomers And older.
Another big difference comes in the diversity of the group. More than half of the millennials and younger generations classify themselves as a racial or ethnic minority, compared to less than 30% of Baby Boomers.
It is no secret that the divide between the older and younger generations has developed on a global stage. Trends like the phrase “Ok, boomer” emerged after a long history of negative ideology about the age of previous generations regarding social justice or climate change.
“The pandemic and recent activism are likely to further push this generation to promote a number of progressive causes,” wrote the author of the analysis, William Fey.

Brookings’ analysis found that other surveys show that these generations also differ in other respects, such as issues related to immigration reform, criminal justice, protection of the environment, the role of the Government and the importance of diversity.
“If the nation’s most racially diverse generations, which now comprise more than half the population, can spearhead a movement involving their older peers and parents, it would send a strong signal that the country is changing significantly », Continued Fey.
Projections show that by 2030, millennials And the youngest will not only be the dominant generations, but they will also represent more than half of all voters.
