On Saturday, Argentina exceeded the 400,000 COVID-19 threshold, after recording a record 9,230 new infections within 24 hours and 82 deaths from the virus, the Ministry of Health announced.
In this country of 44 million people, the number of deaths due to the pandemic reached 8,353 out of 401,226 injuries.
The high number of injuries was recorded within a day, the day after the government announced that it will extend a number of quarantine measures until September 20.
At a time when indoor gatherings are still prohibited, the authorities allowed Friday, in all parts of the country, gatherings of a maximum of 10 people in the open air, provided that masks are worn and a distance of two meters is kept from one person to another.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez expressed his concern about the rapid increase in the number of injuries in certain areas of the country, especially in the north.
Thousands of Argentinians demonstrated with the support of the opposition last Monday in Buenos Aires and major cities in the country, in opposition to the quarantine imposed by the government, at a time when epidemiologists criticized these demonstrations and gatherings due to the sharp increase in the number of infections and deaths caused by the virus.
