The region most affected by number of cases is the south of the continent, with 642,043 infections, the vast majority in South Africa, with more than 600,000 cases and more than 12,000 deaths, followed by Zambia (10,627 cases, 277 deaths) and Zimbabwe (5,815 cases , cases, 152 deaths), reported the DPA news agency.

The situation, by contrast, continued to improve in the state of Victoria, scene of the largest outbreak of Covid-19 in Australia after the country gradually began to lift its restrictions in mid-May.

For the second day in a row, daily infections decreased and remained below 200, thanks to a prolonged quarantine imposed in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria and the origin of the outbreak that began at the end of June.

The outbreaks also continue to multiply in Europe, where there is already talk of a second wave of coronavirus, after a few months of respite after the first between March and May overwhelmed the health systems of the continent.

Several countries registered records of daily cases, such as the Czech Republic, where the authorities reported this Saturday that 506 new infections were detected in the last 24 hours, a maximum since the pandemic began.

Germany also exceeded 2,000 new coronavirus infections in one day for the first time in almost four months, in the midst of an outbreak whose main focus is homes and geriatrics, reported the German epidemiological surveillance institute RKI.

Meanwhile, Croatia announced on Saturday the return of restrictions to combat the outbreaks that have occurred in the country in recent weeks and are driving away international tourism.

The disease continues to advance strongly in America, which remains the global epicenter of Covid-19 according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Six of the ten countries with the most cases in the world are American: the United States and Brazil, but also Peru, Mexico and Colombia, which exceed 500,000 infected, and Chile, with more than 395,000.
