  • The first time an early vote was held in New York was in 2019 for the general election.
  • Early voting will continue until November 1 and then will stop one day before the last voting day on November 3.

NEW YORK – Thousands of New Yorkers turned out to vote during the first two days of early voting, the first in New York’s history during a presidential election.

The New York City Board of Elections (BOE) announced that more than 190,000 New Yorkers exercised their right to vote on Saturday and Sunday during the first two days of early voting.

The Board announced that, in total, during the two days, 193,915 people voted in New York City: 40,838 in New York, 30,484 in the Bronx, 40,278 in Queens, 61,315 in Brooklyn and 21,000 in Staten Island.

The first time an early voting was held in New York was in 2019 for the general elections where a total of 60,110 New Yorkers voted in a 9-day period, showing a difference in turnout during these 2020 elections.

One of the voters on Sunday was Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who through her social networks shared images of the long line at her polling place in the Bronx and assured that she had waited at least an hour.

There were also clashes on Sunday between allegedly anti-and pro-President Trump groups in Times Square, and elsewhere in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The police reportedly arrested about seven people.

On Saturday, in some places, voters reported waiting hours. The voting line reached a quarter of a mile outside of Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden, a place that is used for the first time in history for voting instead of hosting basketball and hockey games and concerts by world-renowned artists.

There were long lines of people across the state, which has 280 fewer early voting locations than there will be on Election Day. Early voting will continue until November 1 and then will stop one day before the last voting day on November 3.

New York’s nine-day early voting period is shorter than many other states. Californians began voting 29 days before Election Day, while those in Virginia began 45 days earlier. A bill in the Assembly’s election law committee would extend New York’s early voting period to 14 days.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday that a team of lawyers and volunteers called the Election Observer Corps would be established to make sure no one interferes with the vote.

“We are going to have a strong voter protection effort because this election cannot be allowed to be stolen by intimidation,” de Blasio said.
