Montreal: parking meter revenues have melted

MONTREAL | The pandemic has had devastating effects on the revenues of Montreal parking meters, which fell by 90% at the height of the crisis.

In April, only $ 453,441 was raised thanks to them, while they usually bring in $ 5 million on average per month.

The City of Montreal’s Sustainable Mobility Agency, which manages parking revenues, is therefore feeling the impact of the closure of non-essential businesses and the increase in the use of teleworking.

According to figures provided to 24 hours by the Agency, only $ 14 million was accumulated during the first five months of 2020. By comparison, the approximately 18,000 paid parking spaces on the street brought the City close to $ 60 million annually between 2015 and 2018, show the annual reports of Stationnement de Montréal, which formerly managed them. This figure will be far from being reached in 2020, if the trend continues.

The Sustainable Mobility Agency did not want to send us the monthly revenues for the year 2019, despite our repeated requests, on the pretext that they are not subject to the Access to Information Act since these reports were produced by Stationnement de Montréal, a private company.

One thing is certain, the Sustainable Mobility Agency explains that the figures of the last few months are not surprising in the current circumstances.

“Of course, due to the extraordinary health situation we are all experiencing, citizens have reduced their movements, which is normal and desirable for reasons of public health and in compliance with the directives of the public health authorities”, explains the Agency spokesperson Caroline Martel.

The organization’s 2021 budget will also be established taking into account these financial results.

In recent weeks, the development of 200 kilometers of safe active lanes for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists has also led to the withdrawal of parking spaces for the summer period. The City was unable to quantify the total number of parking spaces removed.

The price of parking meters varies between $ 1.50 and $ 3.50 per hour depending on the borough.

Same thing for tickets

A huge drop was also noted in the number of tickets issued for prohibited parking. In January, 52,024 reports had been distributed, a figure that fell to just 3,553 in April, according to data compiled by the Agency.

Thus, for the first five months of 2020, only 169,885 reports were issued to poorly parked motorists in all of the districts under the jurisdiction of the Sustainable Mobility Agency. In 2018, police and parking officers distributed 1,167,192 tickets for this type of offense.
