A man of art and of the shadows, the architect Pierre Diot nevertheless transformed the face of Montluçon during the first half of the 20th century.
The city has decided to pay homage to him through the exhibition Pierre Diot, the architect who shaped Montluçon, visible at the Boris-Vian media library, until Wednesday June 29.
The title is far from being overused as the man born March 3, 1881 in Chazemais worked in the city on the banks of Cher.

For two years, agents from the media library and the Archives and Heritage department searched for plans, building permits and other documents bearing the name of Pierre Diot.
“We have so far identified a hundred houses by Pierre Diot, whether on the left bank or on the right bank. In 1907, he made houses that you wouldn’t think were his. This is why for the exhibition we have drawn up a map of the city to find out where they are. »

The architect Pierre Diot and his houses built by the hundreds in the region of Montluçon (Allier)
Three periods and a collaboration with Marx Dormoy
The exhibition presents the work of Pierre Diot in three main periods: the exotic from 1907 to 1925, the Art Deco from 1925 to 1935 and the Basque from 1935 to 1940.
It also highlights its most emblematic public buildings, born of its collaboration with Marx Dormoy, such as the shower baths on Avenue Jules-Ferry, those in Ville-Gozet and the Anatole-France and Paul-Lafargue schools.
“Montluçon completely changed its face at that time thanks to three characters: the mayor, the architect and the doctor. Pierre Diot was a man of conviction in education, health and culture”
Virginie Laroche-Lachaume (media library agent)

The taste for detail and another face for the city of Montluçon
The visitor will also be able to discover Pierre Diot’s attention to detail with his mosaics or his balustrades.
“This exhibition is likely to show that we have a very beautiful city with exceptional architecture and not just a working-class city with small houses”
Frederic Laporte (mayor of Montluçon)
