On Sunday morning, about 50 people gathered in Brussels to protest against the new corona measures for couples in a long-distance relationship. Those measures have not yet been finalized. “The condition to be in a relationship for at least two years is arbitrary and old-fashioned.”

An estimated fifty to sixty people gathered at the Federal Public Service of the Interior in Brussels on Sunday morning to protest against the new measures for couples in a long-distance relationship. During the National Security Council, Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès (MR) nevertheless announced that international couples in a ‘lasting relationship’ can travel together again from 1 September.
Due to the interpretation of what a ‘lasting relationship’ is, many couples still fall out of the boat. (DS August 21) The conditions have yet to be definitively determined, but according to Prime Minister Wilmès, it should be a relationship of at least two years or couples who have lived together for at least a year. Having a child together would also be one of the conditions.
Old-fashioned
The conditions are arbitrary, old-fashioned and too strict, according to many members of the group ‘Love is not tourism’, which unites couples online in a long-distance relationship. Eva Hoornaert is the initiator of the modest protest on Sunday morning. ‘My friend lives in Israel. We have been together for two years and two months. So we could see each other again from 1 September. In the meantime, couples who have been together for less time are left out in the cold, ‘says Hoornaert.
