LCouncilor for Equality of the Bilbao City Council, Nekane alonso, has affirmed that this year, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, “it is not necessary to mobilize” and attend the protest demonstrations that are called every March 8, for which he has asked citizens to be “sensible”, at the same time what He has said that he believes that the feminist movement, organizer of the marches, will be “responsible” and has asked him to “reconsider” his decision to maintain the demonstrations.
In the presentation at a press conference this Monday of the new awareness campaign for March 8, International Women’s Day, the Bilbao mayor has assured that in other years the City Council itself has encouraged citizens to attend these mobilizations, at the same time that the councilors themselves have done it.
However, he has said that he believes that this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic and although “things seem to be improving little by little, it does not touch”, to the extent that “it is not the time for agglomerations or mobilizations of this type on the street”.
Alonso has assured that it will be possible to celebrate next year and has said to hope that it can be done as they would like, at the same time that he has assured that there are “many ways to claim” and that she as a representative of an institution and the Equality area of the City Council In Bilbao, it is up to the citizens and the women and men who regularly attend these demonstrations to be “sensible and responsible.”
“It is not necessary to mobilize”
Alonso has insisted that he believes that “This year it is not time to mobilize”, although she has stressed that, “of course” she will not be the one who tells the feminist movement that she is the one who calls, “what they have to do”, although afterwards she has said she believes that “they will be responsible”. “It will arrive on March 8, 2022 and it will be celebrated” in the same way “in which it has been celebrated for many years,” he assured.
The mayor has assured that it is “what is due this year” and has stressed that she herself will not attend any mobilization or demonstration, although, as she has said, she will not be “neither worse nor less feminist” nor will she claim Less than other years on March 8. As he has affirmed, it will be possible to claim from their own homes, through social networks or each one from their workplace, for which he has asked citizens to “do it differently this year.”
Alonso has assured that there is a call for the feminist movement, “at least until yesterday,” but he recalled that it is not restricted only to Bilbao.
As she has indicated, the call, from what she has been able to see, “is going to be done”, so she has asked the feminist movement to “reconsider”, although she has insisted that she will not be the one to say “to the feminist movement what Must do”. However, she stressed that the feminist movement “has shown good sense and responsibility many times” and said she hoped that “this time they will also do so.”
