LThe Portland Timbers won the North American Football Championship (MLS) “MLS is back” tournament, beating Orlando 2-1 in the final Tuesday in the Disney World bubble in Orlando, Florida.

French Larrys Mabiala, with a header on a free kick from Argentine captain Diego Valeri (27th), and Croatian Dario Zuparic with opportunism (66th) scored for Portland, against a goal from Uruguayan Mauricio Pereyra, on a pass of the Portuguese Nani (39th).

With this title, the Timbers get their ticket to the next Champions League of Concacaf, the football confederation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

The “MLS is back” tournament was played entirely in the Disney World “bubble”, behind closed doors, in a World Cup-like format.

The competition was cut by two participants in its first days, Dallas and Nashville having had to give up due to cases of Covid-19 contamination within them, before proceeding normally.

The regular season of MLS, suspended since mid-March because of the coronavirus, resumes on Wednesday.

The matches will be played in the stadiums of the 26 teams in the championship until 8 November. After which, 18 qualified clubs will engage in play-offs from November 20, for a final scheduled for December 12. For the time being, the meetings are being held behind closed doors.

Due to travel restrictions between the United States and Canada, a first phase will see each American club play six matches against other American teams by September 14.

The MLS ensures that it is working with the three Canadian clubs involved in this North American championship, Impact Montreal, Toronto FC, Laurent Ciman’s club, Vancouver Whitecaps to allow them to continue the regular season as soon as possible.
